The Shawn Walsh Memorial Endowment Fund was established in the
University of Maine Foundation in 2001 through the efforts of the
Friends of Maine Hockey boosters group, with gifts from colleagues,
friends and fans of William S. "Shawn" Walsh. Walsh was head hockey
coach from 1984 until his death in 2001. He built UMaine Black Bear
Hockey into a respected national powerhouse, winning the Hockey East
title four times and the NCAA National Championship in 1993 and 1999.
The purpose of the fund is to provide support for the men's hockey
program, with at least one scholarship each year awarded in Shawn
Walsh's memory to a University of Maine student who is or will be
involved with the men's hockey team.
